چکیده

Since the dawn of life on Earth some four billions of years ago, gravity has been a more or less stable environmental factor thus influencing the phylogenetic development of all living organisms. On the one side, gravity represents a factor of physical restriction, which compelled the ancestors of all extant living beings to develop basic achievements to counter the gravitational force (e.g., elements of statics like any kind of skeleton from actin to bone to overcome gravity enforced size limits or to keep form). On the other side, already early forms of life possibly used gravity as an appropriate cue for orientation and postural control, since it is continuously present and has a fixed direction. Due to such a thorough adaptation to the Earthly gravity vector, both orientation behavior as well as the ontogenetic development of animals is impaired, when they have to experience altered gravity (∆g; i.e. hyperor microgravity). Nevertheless, animals still can cope with ∆g in a certain range based on their physiological plasticity, which varies among the different animal phyla.

I-17: Recent Developments in Animal Welfare Sciencee

The methodology for the scientific assessment of animal welfare has developed rapidly in recent years and has become a major scientific discipline. The concepts of welfare, need, stress, health, pain, emotion and feeling are now clarified. In teaching, legislation and practical work referring to animal welfare, a clear definition that can be related to other concepts is needed. The welfare of a...

Complementary and Integrative Medicines Used by Cancer Patients to Cope With Chemotherapy-Related Taste Alterations

Introduction: Cancer is a global health problem. Taste change is one of the most common symptoms in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Cancer patients often use Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM) to manage chemotherapy complications. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate CIM used by cancer patients to cope with chemotherapy-related taste alterations. Materials and Methods: T...

The internal model of gravity for hand interception: Parametric adaptation to zero-gravity visual targets on Earth

An internal model is a neural mechanism that mimics the dynamics of an object for either motor control or cognitive functions. Recent research focuses on the issue of whether multiple internal models are learned and switched to cope with a variety of conditions, or single general models are adapted by tuning the parameters. Here we addressed this issue by investigating how the manual intercepti...

New Improvement in Interpretation of Gravity Gradient Tensor Data Using Eigenvalues and Invariants: An Application to Blatchford Lake, Northern Canada

Recently, interpretation of causative sources using components of the gravity gradient tensor (GGT) has had a rapid progress. Assuming N as the structural index, components of the gravity vector and gravity gradient tensor have a homogeneity degree of -N and - (N+1), respectively. In this paper, it is shown that the eigenvalues, the first and the second rotational invariants of the GGT (I1 and ...

Internal model of gravity for hand interception: parametric adaptation to zero-gravity visual targets on Earth.

Internal model is a neural mechanism that mimics the dynamics of an object for sensory motor or cognitive functions. Here we addressed this issue by investigating how the manual interception of a mo...
